Barcelona (Spain), Helsinki (Finland), Louvain (Belgium), Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Palma (Spain) and Porto (Portugal) are shortlisted for the Access City Award 2022. These cities now have the possibility of being recognized for their efforts to become barrier-free and accessible to people with disabilities. Equality Commissioner Helena Dalli said: “Accessibility is a prerequisite for the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in all areas of life. We want to reward cities that lead by example in making accessibility a reality. In these cities, anyone can get to the office, the theater or the park without encountering any obstacles. On 3 December, we will find out which cities will be the winners of the Access City Award 2022.”

The winning cities will demonstrate the best ways to facilitate the access of people with disabilities to public and private spaces, including housing, places of work, public transport, playgrounds and as regards information and communication technologies. This year, 40 cities of the European Union applied for this Prize. Shortlisted national experts and a jury of EU experts have now shortlisted the 6 remaining cities. The award-winning cities will be announced on December 3, 2021 at the Access City Award ceremony on the occasion of the European Disability Day conference, organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the European Disability Forum.

This year's edition of the Access City Award will give a special mention to the city that has deployed the most resources to make its stations accessible to people with disabilities, on the occasion of the European Year of Rail.
