On 15 January, the French city of Grenoble officially became the European ecological capital of 2022, succeeding the Finnish city of Lahti. The opening ceremony took place in the presence of Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius, Barbara Pompili, French minister for ecological transition and Grenoble Mayor Eric Piolle among other participants. Commissioner Sinkevičius said: “Grenoble has earned the title of Ecological Capital thanks to its unwavering commitment to becoming a healthier city for and with its citizens. I hope that Grenoble's Ecological Capital year will give new impetus to its green leadership and inspire other European cities to benefit from the possibilities offered by the European Green Deal. Grenoble obtained this title as a pioneer in sustainable transition, in particular as the first local authority in France to adopt a climate plan. Grenoble has implemented urban policies aimed at reducing pollution and the loss of biodiversity, such as the speed limit of 30 km/h throughout the city, making it the largest low-emissions zone in France."

Throughout its year as Green Capital, Grenoble will invite local players to commit to taking action on one or more of the 12 environmental indicators. The launch of the Year of Grenoble coincides with the French Presidency of the Council, whose priorities include the implementation of the European Green Deal and action in favor of zero pollution, climate neutrality, increased protection of biodiversity and achieving a circular economy.
